Youth prevails in friendly between Bears and Veterans

KORABI BEARS – KORABI VETERANS 3:2 (1:1)

Staten Island, NY – September 2, 2007 – In the smoldering heat of this Memorial Day weekend, this afternoon two Korabi teams, the Bears and the Veterans played a friendly match in preparation for their respective upcoming seasons.

The game started cautiously with both teams feeling each other out until Gzim “Jimmy” Koleci took a pass from the midfield and got past the slower Veterans defense to open the scoring and put the Bears up 1-0. The Bears continued to attack relentlessly but missed numerous scoring opportunities. Late in the first half the Veterans took advantage of a defensive blunder to even the score at 1-1 when Kujtim Kaziu intercepted the ball and put it past the helpless keeper.

The second half began at a much faster pace than the firs half with the Veterans having the upper hand and in a play worthy of the highlight reel; Ariton Sela crossed the ball from the right side to Alit Jani who hit a running volley in upper right corner to give the Veterans a 2-1 lead. It seemed that this was a wake up call for the younger and better conditioned Bears who regained their composure and took control of the game. Shortly thereafter they were rewarded when Robert Mela was able to get his foot on a loose ball in front of the net to even the score at 2-2. In the late minutes of the game the Bears took the lead for good when Arti Mela scored on a mid-range shot to make the score 3-2.

This was a very good game with the Veterans showing excellent ball control and ball movement but the Bears youth and running game was overpowering with a sleuth of missed scoring opportunities.

We would like to thank all of the friends and family members who showed up to support Korabi in this hot holiday weekend.
