Beach Patrol: Likely Cause Was Rip Currents
DAYTONA BEACH – A New York woman drowned this afternoon, while swimming in the waves churned up by Tropical Storm Fay.
The woman, Fatmire Krkuti, 35 and her husband Astrit, 38 were swimming in waist deep water about a block south of Seabreeze Boulevard after 2 p.m. when a potent wave struck them both, said Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Scott. Peterson.
The husband, said he felt disoriented after getting hit, but his wife didn’t resurface.
Her body was found about 50 to 75 feet north, by the shore break.
Rescuers did not say for sure if Krkuti had been caught in a rip current, but said it is likely that is what happened. Although the waves may seem manageable for experienced swimmers, the rip currents are not
