Manhattan, NY – October 3, 2010 – Third game for Korabi scheduled to be played at Grand Street Field, in the East side of Manhattan, and take on Homenetmen of NY. The team van at Rusty’s house was full and ready to leave around 4:30 PM, with the exception of Darien and his buddy who are late again for the third time (a perfect 100% record). Finally they show up and we are on our way to the soccer match. Due to an ongoing intramural game a half hour delay was on our favor as Berat and Alban (two Korabi starters) who were supposed to be at the field had decided to visit a relative on Manhattan and show up late, 15 min. after game had started, talk about good timing?.

The game was a see-saw battle on the first 15 minutes as both teams had some opportunities to score as Homenetmen of NY had the best opportunity in the 7th minute with a quick counter attack on the left wing, a dangerous cross in the box and a shot on goal that was spectacularly saved by Korabi goalkeeper Ari Dema. On the other end shots by Darien, Christian and Asmir are high over the goal post.

The Korabi midfielders Abdulla, Darien, Christian and Berat have now taken control of the game, as they start breaking through the Homenetmen defense, and finally in the 37th minute Abdulla dribbles and takes a shot that was saved by the goalkeeper, the rebound is tapped twice and cleared both times from the goal, finally a dive header by Berat puts the ball in the net. It certainly looked like a ping pong match with the ball was bouncing back and forth and a 1:0 lead for Korabi.

The second half started with a Berat, Asmir and Abdulla combination in the 48th minute, and an Abdulla Begai hard shot to goalies left found the net as it went under the diving goalkeeper for a 2:0 Korabi lead.
For the next 30 minutes the Korabi defense and midfield are playing well and have shut any buildup by opponents. Early substitutions of four players by Korabi around the 75th minute changed the tide as some Korabi substitute players were out of position and lost, Homenetmen took advantage of Korabi weakness and came back to life on the 85th minute as Homenetmen was able to score a goal, all of a sudden a 2:1 Korabi lead was on very shaky grounds.

Homenetmens attack was relentless as a couple of shots barely missing the goal, a shot hit the right goal post on the 88th minute, and finally save after save by Ari Dema. Two dangerous corner kicks were cleared by the Korabi defense and the game was finally over, a 2:1 Korabi win is in the books as their third away win and a first place in the standings.

The coach later was sorry for the early substitutions which changed the game, and it will not happen again, but still the new young players will need to be tested and get some game playing experience at one time or another.

Next Sunday at 3:30 PM Korabi vs. Gotham Argo at Greenbelt on Staten Island.
